Pilates for Menopause in Northampton
Manage menopausal symptoms naturally through targeted Reformer Pilates – in small, supportive classes.
How Menopause Affects Your Body
Menopause isn’t just hot flushes. The decline in oestrogen affects virtually every system in your body: bones, joints, muscles, pelvic floor, metabolism, sleep, and mood.
The good news? Targeted exercise – specifically resistance-based movement like Reformer Pilates – can directly address many of these changes. It’s not about fighting menopause; it’s about giving your body what it needs to stay strong, mobile, and confident through this transition.
How Reformer Pilates Helps Each Symptom
Bone Density
Oestrogen protects bone density. As levels fall, bones weaken – increasing osteoporosis risk. Reformer Pilates provides resistance-based, weight-bearing exercise that stimulates bone formation. The springs create load without impact.
Joint Stiffness
Declining oestrogen reduces joint lubrication and increases inflammation. The Reformer’s controlled, spring-supported movements take joints through their full range without the jarring impact of running or HIIT.
Muscle Loss
Women lose muscle mass faster during menopause, which slows metabolism and affects balance. Spring-based resistance builds lean muscle progressively and safely – supporting a healthy metabolism.
Pelvic Floor
Hormonal changes weaken the pelvic floor, increasing risk of incontinence and prolapse. Pilates rebuilds these muscles safely and progressively. See our pelvic floor page.
Mood & Sleep
Regular movement improves mood, reduces anxiety, and helps regulate sleep patterns. The mindful, focused nature of Pilates is particularly effective – it’s an hour where your mind has to be present, not spiralling.
Weight Changes
Shifting fat distribution and slower metabolism are common. Building lean muscle through resistance work supports your metabolism naturally – no crash diets, no HIIT burnout.

The Science: Why Exercise Matters During Menopause
Menopause isn’t just a hormonal shift – it has measurable effects on almost every system in your body. Understanding the science helps explain why the right kind of exercise makes such a difference.
Bone density – Oestrogen plays a critical role in maintaining bone density. As levels decline, bones lose density faster than they rebuild it, significantly increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Resistance-based exercise – like the spring-loaded work on a Reformer – stimulates bone-building cells (osteoblasts) and slows bone loss.
Muscle mass – Women lose muscle mass at an accelerated rate during menopause, a process called sarcopenia. Less muscle means slower metabolism, reduced balance, and increased fall risk. Spring-based Reformer work builds and maintains lean muscle progressively and safely.
Joint lubrication – Declining oestrogen reduces synovial fluid production, leading to stiffer, more painful joints – especially in the mornings. Controlled, full-range movements on the Reformer help maintain joint health and mobility without the jarring impact of high-intensity exercise.
Sleep quality – Night sweats and hormonal fluctuations disrupt sleep. Regular resistance exercise has been shown to improve sleep quality and duration. Many of our members report sleeping noticeably better after starting regular Pilates.
Mood regulation – Oestrogen influences serotonin production. As levels drop, anxiety, irritability, and low mood can increase. Exercise triggers endorphin release and provides a structured, mindful activity that many women find genuinely mood-lifting.
Weight distribution – Menopause commonly shifts fat storage from hips and thighs to the abdomen, increasing cardiovascular risk. Building lean muscle through resistance work supports a healthier metabolism and body composition – without crash diets or punishing HIIT sessions.
What a Typical Session Looks Like
You won’t be singled out or put in a “menopause class.” Our classes are mixed – women of all ages and stages train together, and your instructor adjusts for you individually within the group. With a maximum of 4 per class, there’s always time for personal attention.
A typical session might include:
Spring-loaded footwork for bone loading – Pressing against the Reformer’s springs creates the kind of resistance that stimulates bone density. Your instructor sets the spring tension to challenge you appropriately – heavy enough to create a bone-loading effect, controlled enough to be safe for your joints.
Tower work for balance – Standing exercises with vertical spring resistance challenge your balance and proprioception in ways that lying on the Reformer can’t. This is particularly important as balance naturally declines with age and hormonal changes.
Stretches on the barrel for joint mobility – The Spine Corrector (barrel) provides a supported surface for stretching that opens the chest, mobilises the thoracic spine, and relieves the stiffness that menopausal joint changes can cause.
Core and pelvic floor work – Integrated into every session, not as an add-on. Your deep core and pelvic floor work together, and both need attention during menopause.
The pace is challenging but never punishing. You’ll work hard and leave feeling better than when you arrived.
It’s Not Just Physical
Menopause can feel isolating. Your body is changing in ways you can’t control, your sleep is disrupted, your mood swings between fine and tearful, and the world expects you to carry on as normal.
At The Old Dairy, many of our members are navigating exactly the same thing. There’s something genuinely powerful about being in a room with other women who understand – even if you never talk about it explicitly. The shared experience creates a quiet solidarity that matters.
The mental health benefits of regular Pilates during menopause go beyond endorphins. It’s the confidence that comes from getting stronger when your body feels like it’s working against you. It’s the sense of control in a phase of life that can feel uncontrollable. It’s having one hour a week that’s entirely about you – focused, purposeful, and restorative.
Our small class sizes (maximum 4) mean you’re never anonymous and never overlooked. Your instructor knows your name, your body, your challenges, and your progress. That personal connection matters more than any app or online workout ever could.
Perimenopause Too
You don’t have to wait until your periods stop. Perimenopause – the transition phase – can begin in your early 40s (sometimes even late 30s) and last for several years before menopause itself. Symptoms during perimenopause can be just as disruptive: irregular periods, mood changes, sleep disruption, joint pain, brain fog, and weight changes.
Starting Pilates during perimenopause gives you a significant advantage. Building bone density, maintaining muscle mass, and establishing a strong pelvic floor before oestrogen levels drop further means you enter menopause from a position of strength rather than playing catch-up.
Research consistently shows that early intervention with resistance-based exercise makes the menopausal transition easier. The women who maintain regular exercise through perimenopause report fewer and less severe symptoms than those who become less active.
If you’re in your late 30s or 40s and noticing changes, this is the ideal time to start. Your introductory session (£33) is a perfect first step – personal, relaxed, and completely tailored to where you are right now.
