Pilates for Horse Riders in Northampton
Improve your symmetry in the saddle, build core strength, and ride with more confidence.
Why Every Rider Needs Pilates
Your horse can feel every imbalance in your body. A stiff hip, a weak core, a collapsed shoulder – it all transfers through the saddle and directly affects your horse’s way of going.
Reformer Pilates is uniquely suited to riders because the spring-based resistance mimics the dynamic, responsive nature of riding itself. You learn to stabilise your centre while your limbs move independently – exactly what you need in the saddle.
At The Old Dairy, our instructors have specialist training in horse rider symmetry. We understand the specific demands of dressage, jumping, eventing, and hacking – and we know how to translate that into targeted Pilates work.
Common Rider Issues We Address
Collapsed hip
One of the most common rider faults. Often caused by an imbalance in the pelvis or weakness on one side. We identify and correct this through targeted spring work and proprioceptive exercises.
Tight hip flexors
Hours in the saddle (and hours at a desk) create chronically tight hip flexors. This restricts your ability to follow the horse’s movement and deepens your seat. Our leg spring work and push-through bar exercises open the hips progressively.
Weak core
Not surface-level abs – the deep stabilising muscles that give you an independent seat. Every Reformer exercise engages these muscles, building the kind of core strength that lets you absorb movement without gripping.
Rounded shoulders
Forward-leaning posture affects your rein contact and your horse’s balance. Our arm spring work and chest-opening exercises on the Tower correct this pattern over time.
Asymmetric seat
Most riders are stronger or heavier on one side. Your horse compensates – and so do you, creating a cycle that gets worse over time. We use the Reformer’s spring system to identify and rebalance these asymmetries.
Inability to absorb movement
Stiffness in the spine prevents you from following the horse’s motion. Spinal articulation exercises on the Reformer and Tower restore the segmental mobility you need for a supple, effective seat.

How Pilates Improves Your Riding
Everything you do in the saddle depends on your body working symmetrically, independently, and from a stable centre. Reformer Pilates develops exactly these qualities – and in ways that directly transfer to your riding.
An Independent Seat
An independent seat means your hands, legs, and core can work separately without one affecting the other. On the Reformer, the moving carriage demands exactly this – you learn to stabilise your pelvis while your legs push and pull against spring resistance, developing the same independent control you need when your horse changes pace, direction, or balance.
Core Stability in the Saddle
Riding requires deep core engagement – not surface-level “abs,” but the transversus abdominis, multifidus, and diaphragm working together to absorb your horse’s movement. Every Reformer exercise trains this deep stabilising system under spring resistance, building the kind of quiet, automatic core control that keeps you centred over fences and supple through lateral work.
Asymmetry Correction
Horses feel every imbalance you carry. A stronger right side, a collapsed left hip, a twist in your pelvis – it all transfers through the saddle. Our instructors use the Reformer’s spring system to identify exactly where your asymmetries lie, then progressively correct them with targeted unilateral work. Your horse will thank you.
Hip Mobility for Dressage and Jumping
Dressage demands open, supple hips that can follow the horse’s movement without gripping. Jumping requires explosive hip flexion and extension with rapid recovery. The Reformer’s leg spring work and hip circle exercises develop both range of motion and dynamic control – whether you need to deepen your seat for collected work or fold quickly over a fence.
Common Rider Imbalances We See
After years of working with riders across disciplines, our instructors recognise the patterns that show up again and again:
Collapsed hip in sitting trot or canter – One hip drops lower than the other, often without the rider realising. This shifts your weight to one seat bone, causing your horse to drift or fall onto one shoulder. We use single-leg Reformer work to identify the weaker side and rebuild symmetry.
One-sided rein contact – If your right shoulder is tighter than your left, you’ll carry more tension in one rein. Arm spring work on the Reformer opens the chest and balances shoulder mobility so your contact becomes even and elastic.
Gripping with the knees – A common habit that blocks your leg aids and pushes you out of the saddle. Pilates teaches you to engage your inner thighs and adductors properly, creating a draping leg rather than a gripping one.
Hollow back in canter – An over-arched lower back prevents you from following the canter movement. Spinal articulation exercises on the Reformer – bridging, pelvic curls, and sequential rolling – restore the segmental mobility you need for a fluid, following seat.
Tight hip flexors from saddle position – Hours in the saddle (and at a desk) shorten the hip flexors, which restricts your ability to sit deep and follow the horse’s movement. Our targeted stretching on the Reformer and push-through bar progressively opens the hip flexors while strengthening the opposing muscles.
Equipment We Use for Riders
Our studio is equipped with specialist Pilates apparatus that is uniquely suited to riders:
The Reformer
The Reformer’s spring-loaded sliding carriage mirrors the dynamic, responsive nature of a horse’s movement. As you push against the springs, the carriage moves under you – just as the horse moves under you in the saddle. This teaches your body to stabilise while everything else is moving, building the automatic core control that defines an effective rider. We adjust spring tension to challenge you progressively, from gentle rehabilitation to demanding athletic work.
The Tower
Tower work includes standing exercises with vertical spring resistance – mimicking the upright posture and balance demands of two-point position, rising trot, and jumping. The push-through bar is excellent for opening tight shoulders and hip flexors, while the leg springs develop the independent leg control you need for clear, precise aids.
The Foot Corrector
Your feet are your foundation – in the stirrups and on the ground. The Foot Corrector strengthens the intrinsic muscles of the foot and improves ankle stability, which translates directly to a more secure, balanced position in the stirrup. It’s particularly useful for riders who lose stirrups or ride with excessive weight on the outside edge of the foot.
