What Is Classical Pilates?

Classical Pilates is the original method as Joseph Pilates designed it. Unlike contemporary Pilates, which adapts and modifies exercises for individual needs, Classical Pilates follows a set sequence of exercises in a specific order, performed with discipline and flow.

Joseph Pilates called his method “Contrology” – the complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit. He believed that by performing his exercises in a precise sequence, with repetition and focus, the body would naturally become stronger, more flexible, and more balanced.

Classical Pilates honours this original vision. Every session follows the same foundational structure, building from one exercise to the next in a deliberate, flowing sequence.

The Philosophy Behind Classical Pilates

Joseph Pilates developed his method in the early 20th century, drawing on gymnastics, martial arts, yoga, and his observations of animal movement. He was a sickly child who dedicated his life to physical conditioning, eventually creating a system of exercise that he believed could transform the human body.

His core belief was simple: “In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 sessions you’ll see the difference, and in 30 sessions you’ll have a whole new body.”

Classical Pilates preserves this belief in the power of repetition and sequence. Rather than constantly varying exercises (as contemporary approaches do), the Classical method trusts that by repeating the same movements with increasing precision, your body naturally deepens its understanding and capability.

Joseph Pilates on a Reformer

Classical vs Contemporary: What’s the Difference?

Classical Pilates

Set sequence – Exercises follow Joseph Pilates’ original order, every time.

Heavier springs – Working with more resistance builds deeper strength.

Faster pace – Exercises flow from one to the next with minimal rest.

Repetition – The same sequence deepens your practice over time.

Mind-body discipline – Focus, precision, and control are paramount.

Contemporary Pilates

Adapted sequence – Exercises are selected and modified based on individual needs.

Variable springs – Resistance is adjusted throughout the session.

Varied pace – Sessions can be slower or faster depending on goals.

Variety – Different exercises each session keep things fresh.

Therapeutic focus – Often incorporates rehabilitation principles.

Both approaches are valid and effective. At The Old Dairy, we offer both – so you can experience the best of each.

What to Expect in a Classical Session

Expect to work with heavier springs and at a faster pace than our contemporary Reformer classes. The exercises flow from one to the next in Joseph Pilates’ original sequence, building on each other to create a complete, full-body workout.

A typical Classical session on the Reformer follows this general structure:

Footwork – The session opens with a series of precise foot positions on the foot bar, warming the body and establishing connection with the springs.

The Hundred – The signature Pilates exercise. Pumping the arms while maintaining a stable core, building heat and stamina.

Short Spine & Long Spine – Deep spinal articulation using the straps, rolling through every vertebra.

Coordination – Arms, legs, and breath working together in precise timing.

Pulling Straps – Lying prone, pulling against spring resistance. Builds back strength and opens the chest.

Long Stretch Series – Plank-based work that challenges full-body stability and control.

Knee Stretches – Dynamic, flowing movements that build explosive core power.

Running & Pelvic Lift – The session closes with rhythmic movements that integrate everything you’ve worked on.
