Reformer Pilates in menopause: strength, bones and mood

Menopause changes a lot, sometimes all at once. Alongside the well-known symptoms, this is also the stage when we naturally start to lose muscle and bone density, when balance can shift, and when sleep, mood and joints can all feel less reliable. Reformer Pilates is one of the most supportive forms of movement you can lean on through it, and here is why.

Menopause is deeply individual, and decisions about HRT and symptom management belong with you and your GP. Pilates sits alongside that care, giving your body strength and steadiness through the change.

Why the reformer suits this season

The reformer gives you smooth, spring-loaded resistance while supporting your whole body. That means you can build real strength without the impact or the strain that can make aching joints worse. On the days your body feels tender, the effort dials down; as you feel stronger, it dials up. It meets you where you are, every single time.

What it helps with

  • Strength and muscle. Resistance work helps hold on to the muscle we naturally lose in these years, which keeps you strong, capable and independent.
  • Bone health. Loaded, resisted movement is part of what helps support bone density, an important consideration as oestrogen falls. It works best as one piece of an active, weight-bearing lifestyle.
  • Balance and stability. Controlled reformer work sharpens balance and the deep stabilising muscles, which protects you as the years go on.
  • Mood, stress and sleep. The mix of focused movement and steady breathing is a genuine reset for a busy nervous system, and many members tell us they simply sleep better.
  • Achy, stiff joints. Gentle, supported mobility helps ease the stiffness that can creep in, keeping hips, shoulders and spine moving freely.
  • Core and pelvic floor. The reformer is brilliant for deep core and pelvic floor work, both of which can need a little attention at this stage.

How we do it at The Old Dairy

With a maximum of four people in the room, your instructor can genuinely tailor each session to how you feel that week. Whether you are brand new to movement or returning after a break, you are never rushed and never left behind. If you would like to read more about our approach, our Pilates for menopause page walks through it, and our reformer classes are open to every level.
