Rotator cuff problems: how reformer Pilates can help your shoulders
If reaching into a cupboard, fastening a seatbelt or sleeping on one side has become painful, your rotator cuff may be the culprit — and the good news is that shoulders like this tend to respond very well to the right, gentle strengthening.
What is the rotator cuff?
The rotator cuff is a group of four small muscles and their tendons that wrap the shoulder and keep the ball of the joint centred and stable as your arm moves. Common problems include impingement (pinching), tendinopathy (an irritated, overloaded tendon) and, sometimes, tears — often bringing pain when reaching or lifting, weakness, and disturbed sleep.
Why it happens
Rotator cuff trouble usually comes from a mix of overuse, underlying weakness, poor shoulder-blade control and posture — those rounded-forward shoulders from desk life crowd the space the tendons need.
How reformer Pilates helps
- Light, precise resistance. The reformer's springs offer smooth, low, adjustable load — exactly the kind of gentle, controlled strengthening shoulders in recovery respond to.
- Shoulder-blade stability. A stable, well-controlled shoulder blade gives the cuff a solid base to work from — a big focus of our work.
- Posture that opens the shoulder. Strengthening the upper back draws the shoulders back and creates room, easing impingement.
- Full-range control. We rebuild confident, controlled movement through the whole range, not just in the easy middle.
