Reformer Pilates for beginners: an honest first-timer's guide

Walking into a reformer studio for the first time can feel a little daunting, all those straps and springs. The truth is, reformer Pilates is one of the most beginner-friendly ways to move, and the machine that looks intimidating is actually there to support you. Here is what to expect.

You don't need to be fit, flexible or experienced

Really. The reformer meets you exactly where you are. Every exercise can be made easier or harder in seconds by changing the springs, so a first-timer and a seasoned mover can do the same movement side by side, each at the right level. Whatever your starting point, you belong here.

Your first steps with us

Everyone starts with a one-to-one introductory session. It is relaxed and unhurried: we see how you move, talk through anything you would like us to know, and set you up so your first class feels familiar rather than fresh and frightening. From there you join a class capped at four, so your instructor can keep a genuine eye on you.

What your first few weeks feel like

  • Week one: learning the basics, breathing, alignment and how the reformer moves. Expect to concentrate more than to sweat.
  • The first month: the movements start to feel familiar, and you notice you are standing a little taller.
  • Beyond: real, measurable strength, mobility and control, and the quiet confidence that comes with it.

Come and try

If you have been curious but nervous, this is your sign. Our New to Reformer page tells you more, and every one of our reformer classes welcomes complete beginners. Come as you are, and we will take good care of the rest.
