Your first month at The Old Dairy

Thinking about starting reformer Pilates, but not quite sure what you are signing up for? That hesitation is the most normal thing in the world - almost every member here felt it before their first visit. So here is exactly what your first month at The Old Dairy looks like, from the moment you book to the moment it starts to feel like your studio too.

Week one: your introductory session

Everyone begins the same way: a personal 1:1 introductory session (£33). There is nothing to prepare and nothing to prove. Your instructor spends the hour getting to know you and how you move - what feels strong, what feels stiff, anything that aches, and what you would like to change. You will meet the reformer properly, with the springs doing much of the supporting at first, and learn how the carriage, footbar and straps work together.

Most people leave saying the same two things: that it was gentler than they expected, and that they already understand why people rave about it. The hour is also yours to ask anything - no question is too small, and the answers shape everything that follows.

Week two: finding your level

From your intro, your instructor recommends where to start - we run classes from Level 1 to 3, so nobody is ever thrown in beyond themselves. If a health condition, injury or pregnancy means a group is not the right fit yet, they may suggest beginning with private sessions instead. There is no wrong answer here, only the right starting point for you.

Weeks two to four: your first classes

Your first group class will have no more than four people in it - that is every class here, always. It means your instructor sees every repetition you do, adjusts you in the moment, and nothing slips past unnoticed. Expect to spend those first classes getting fluent in the fundamentals: footwork, bridging, arm work in the straps, and the quiet art of moving with control rather than momentum.

By your third or fourth class, something shifts: the machine stops feeling like a contraption and starts feeling like a tool you know how to use. That is usually the week people book their next month before leaving the building.

What to wear, what to bring

Comfortable, fitted activewear you can move in, and grippy socks if you have them - we keep spares if you do not. Bring water; everything else, from equipment to props, is provided. There is free parking right outside, so give yourself five spare minutes for your first visit and you will arrive unhurried.

What members notice first

Ask our members what changed in their first month and the answers are rarely about toned arms. They talk about standing taller without thinking about it, climbing stairs more easily, sleeping better, and a kind of body confidence that creeps up on you. The visible changes come too - but the feeling arrives first.

Common questions

How fit do I need to be to start? You do not. The springs meet you exactly where you are - the same exercise can be gentle or demanding depending on how it is set. Complete beginners are our speciality, not our exception.

What if I am nervous? Then you are in good company - most people are, and it rarely survives the first ten minutes. An hour one-to-one with a friendly instructor, no audience, no mirrors to perform for. It is designed to be the least intimidating start in fitness.

When will I see results? Honestly: you will feel different within a handful of sessions, and others tend to notice something - posture, usually - within a couple of months of consistent classes. Bodies differ; consistency is the ingredient that does not.

If you have been circling the idea for a while, consider this your nudge. Have a look at our movements, and when you are ready, we would love to meet you - one hour, one to one, no strings.
